At 205 km in length and 1303 m at its deepest point, the Sognefjord is Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, with fjord villages and mountain peaks lining up one after another.
The boat trip here is spectacular, and the further you go into the fjord, the higher the mountainsides edging it. One idea is to come aboard in the centre of Bergen and disembark in Balestrand. Balestrand boasts many well-waymarked trails virtually from the quayside, as do Vik, Aurland and Flåm.
It’s no surprise that the fjord landscape is used as the backdrop for large parts of the Norwegian reality TV show 71° nord, and that many outdoor and extreme-sports enthusiasts have settled here. The dramatic landscape provides the ideal location for base jumping, climbing, freeriding and many other nature-based experiences. But maybe you prefer something less strenuous? What about spending a day kayaking on the fjord? Or you could join a guided glacier hike on the Jostedalsbreen glacier or head out in a RIB to learn about the wildlife living in and around the fjord. You’ll be spoilt for choice! With so much to do, it’s a good idea to book to stay overnight in the area.
Many people who come here are impressed by the region’s architecture and history. The churches in Vik, Undredal and Balestrand are definitely worth a visit, each with a completely different story to tell. Or perhaps Flåm is more your thing? Experience the Flåm valley from a zipline or by bike, and enjoy a delicious meal at Ægir Brewery.
